Symptoms

The dryer heating element is not reaching the target temperature. The drying cycle takes significantly longer and clothes remain damp after the cycle completes.

Possible Causes

  • Heating element open-circuited or partially broken
  • High-limit thermostat tripped and not auto-resetting
  • Airflow restricted by a clogged lint filter or blocked exhaust vent
  • Cycling thermostat stuck open, preventing power to the element

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Check the lint filter and clean thoroughly
A clogged filter reduces airflow and can cause overheating or element failure
  2. Step 2: Inspect and clean the exhaust vent from the dryer to the exterior wall
Use a vent cleaning brush to remove accumulated lint
  3. Step 3: Measure the heating element resistance with a multimeter
An open or very high reading indicates a broken element; replace it
  4. Step 4: Test the high-limit and cycling thermostats for continuity
Replace any thermostat that does not show continuity at room temperature

How to Reset

Reset: If the high-limit thermostat is a manual-reset type, press the red reset button on the heating element housing after cleaning the vent.

Common Replacement Parts

  • Heating element: 240V, 4000-5000W (Match to dryer model number)
  • High-limit thermostat: Manual or auto-reset, 150C (Match to dryer model)
  • Cycling thermostat: Adjustable or fixed, 60-80C (Match to dryer model)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How often should I clean the lint filter?

After every load. A clogged filter reduces efficiency, increases energy use, and is the leading cause of dryer fires.

  • Q: How do I clean the exhaust vent?

Disconnect the vent from the dryer and exterior wall. Use a vent cleaning brush kit to remove lint. Clean at least annually.

  • Q: What causes element failure?

Restricted airflow causing overheating, age, and voltage spikes. Always maintain clean filters and vents to extend element life.
