Symptoms
The thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) is not regulating correctly. The evaporator superheat is too high or too low, causing poor cooling performance or compressor floodback.

- TXV power head charge lost (bulb charge leaked), preventing proper modulation
- TXV bulb not properly clamped to the suction line, giving incorrect temperature signal
- Equalizer line plugged or the external equalizer port is blocked
- TXV valve seat or spring damaged from debris in the system
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Measure the evaporator superheat at the bulb location
Superheat should be 5-8K for most applications; adjust if outside this range - Step 2: Verify the TXV bulb is clamped tightly to a clean, horizontal section of suction line
Insulate the bulb; reposition if on a vertical pipe or near a bend - Step 3: Check the external equalizer line for blockage
The equalizer must connect downstream of the bulb; verify the tubing is clear - Step 4: If the TXV cannot maintain correct superheat despite adjustment, replace the valve
Use OEM-specified valve with matching tonnage and refrigerant
How to Reset
Reset: After TXV adjustment or replacement, verify superheat is stable at 5-8K under varying load conditions.
