Eaton Freedom Series Error Code F-001

Eaton Electrical Critical Overcurrent

Model: Freedom Series | Code: F-001

Applicable Systems
Freedom Series

Symptoms

The Freedom Series NEMA starter trips on instantaneous overcurrent. The red trip flag on the C440 overload relay is visible and the contactor has dropped out. The motor stops immediately.

Possible Causes

  • Severe mechanical overload or jam causing locked rotor
  • Phase-to-phase short in the conduit between starter and motor
  • Instantaneous trip setting on C440 too low for motor inrush
  • Single-phasing condition causing severe current imbalance and overcurrent in remaining phases

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Rotate the motor shaft by hand to verify mechanical freedom
Shaft turns smoothly; coupling and driven equipment are free
  2. Step 2: Megger the motor and conduit conductors at 500V DC
Insulation resistance >5 MOhm; no phase-to-phase shorts
  3. Step 3: Check the C440 instantaneous trip dial setting against motor locked-rotor current
Setting is >=8x motor FLA to allow for normal inrush
  4. Step 4: Measure phase currents with a clamp-on ammeter during an attempted start
All three phases are present and balanced within 10%

How to Reset

Reset the C440 overload relay by pressing the blue reset button after a cooling period. Re-energize the contactor only after confirming the fault is cleared.

Common Replacement Parts

  • C440A1A120SXN: Eaton C440 electronic overload relay (Verify current range and control voltage compatibility)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is the cooling time after a severe trip?

The C440 requires a minimum 3-minute cooling period after a Class 10 trip at 600% FLA. Longer for Class 20 or 30 settings.

  • Q: Can I disable the instantaneous trip to prevent nuisance trips?

No. The instantaneous element protects against short circuits. If nuisance trips occur, investigate motor or load issues, not the protection setting.
