Applicable Systems
OBD-II
Symptoms
O2 sensor signal stuck at mid-range with no switching; ECM cannot enter closed-loop; open loop operation.
Possible Causes
- O2 sensor heater circuit open (sensor cold)
- Sensor signal circuit open
- ECM sensor input failure
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Check O2 sensor heater resistance
Resistance 6-20 ohm - Step 2: Check heater power supply (+12V from relay)
+12V present at heater pin - Step 3: Check sensor signal circuit continuity
Signal wire intact - Step 4: Replace O2 sensor if heater open
New sensor heater resistance normal - Step 5: Clear code and verify sensor activity
Sensor switches after warm-up
How to Reset
Clear with OBD-II scanner; sensor must warm up before closed-loop.
Common Replacement Parts
- O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1 (OEM spec)
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: How long for O2 sensor to warm up?
Heated sensors warm up in 30-60 seconds. Non-heated may take 2-3 minutes. ECM stays in open loop until sensor reaches operating temp.
