Symptoms
The EMCP 4.2 reports fault 3257-2 for the Air Inlet Heater circuit. The data is erratic, intermittent, or incorrect. The engine may experience hard starting in cold weather or elevated emissions during warm-up.
Possible Causes
- Air Inlet Heater relay contact corrosion causing intermittent operation
- Heater element open circuit or partial failure
- Wiring connector loose at heater or relay
- ECM monitoring circuit internal fault
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Check EMCP fault log for intermittent pattern of 3257-2
Fault appears intermittently, possibly temperature-related - Step 2: Inspect Air Inlet Heater relay contacts and wiring connections
Contacts clean, connectors tight and free of corrosion - Step 3: Measure resistance of Air Inlet Heater element
Resistance within specification (typically 0.5-2.0 ohm) - Step 4: Verify relay control signal from ECM with multimeter during cold start
Signal present and relay clicks energized when engine temperature below threshold
How to Reset
To reset: 1) Fix the intermittent connection or replace failed heater element. 2) Press FAULT RESET on EMCP. 3) Press AUTO.
