Symptoms
The GE ArcWatch arc-flash detection system triggers a fast trip to the upstream breaker. The pressure relief vents activate and the arc fault indicator turns red. Smoke may be visible from the vents.
Possible Causes
- Internal arc due to insulation failure on busbars or terminations
- Tool or foreign object left inside the switchgear during maintenance
- Overvoltage surge causing flashover across air gaps
- Contaminated busbar insulation from dust, moisture, or conductive deposits
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Do not open the switchgear. Wait 30 minutes for cooling and gas dissipation. Wear arc-flash PPE
No toxic gas detected and compartment temperature is ambient - Step 2: Inspect the pressure relief vents for damage and verify they opened correctly
Vents are intact, not blocked, and show signs of activation - Step 3: Use a borescope through the inspection window to assess internal damage without exposing personnel
Visible busbars show no signs of melting or severe carbon tracking - Step 4: If damage is visible, isolate and lock out all energy sources, then schedule internal inspection by trained personnel

How to Reset
The ArcWatch system self-resets once the arc condition clears. A manual acknowledgment is required on the ArcWatch HMI before re-energization is permitted.
