Symptoms

Xe-Series controller reports a VFD (variable frequency drive) fault code. The compressor cannot modulate speed and runs in a fixed emergency mode or stops entirely depending on the VFD fault severity.

Possible Causes

  • VFD output short-circuit or ground fault detected by the drive IGBT module
  • VFD DC bus overvoltage from regenerative braking or supply voltage spike
  • VFD parameter corruption after a power outage or EMC event
  • VFD cooling fan failure causing the drive to overheat and trip on thermal protection

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Record the exact VFD fault code from the Xe controller display or VFD keypad
    Cross-reference the code in the VFD manual - common codes are OC (overcurrent), OV (overvoltage), and OH (overheat)
  2. Step 2: Inspect the motor cable and junction box for loose connections, chafing, or moisture ingress
    Tighten all connections and measure motor winding insulation resistance with a megohmmeter (expect >100 Mohm)
  3. Step 3: Check the VFD cooling fan - listen for rotation and feel for exhaust airflow at the drive vents
    Replace the fan if stalled or noisy; clean the drive heatsink fins with compressed air
  4. Step 4: If no hardware fault is found, perform a VFD parameter reset to factory defaults and reload the compressor profile
    Consult the Ingersoll Rand service software to upload the correct parameter set for the R-Series model

How to Reset

Reset: Clear the VFD fault via the drive keypad, then press Alarm Reset on the Xe controller. The compressor will ramp up from minimum speed over a 10-second ramp period.
