Kaeser ASD/BS Series Error Code K001

Kaeser Compressor Critical Temperature

Model: ASD/BS Series | Code: K001

Applicable Systems
ASD/BS Series

Symptoms

Compression temperature at the airend discharge exceeds 110C (230F). The Sigma Control 2 triggers an immediate shutdown to prevent oil breakdown and rotor coating damage.

Possible Causes

  • Oil cooler fins heavily contaminated with dust, lint, or oil film blocking airflow
  • Cooling fan motor failed or fan blade broken, reducing air volume through the cooler
  • Thermostatic valve malfunction keeping oil in bypass and away from the cooler
  • Ambient temperature above 45C (113F) exceeding the design rating of the standard cooler

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Inspect the oil cooler from the fan side - shine a flashlight through the fins to check for blockage
Blow out fins with compressed air (max 2 bar) or wash with foaming cleaner if oily
  2. Step 2: Start the compressor and verify the cooling fan starts within 5 seconds of the airend running
If the fan does not turn, test the fan motor capacitor and winding resistance; replace motor if failed
  3. Step 3: Remove the thermostatic valve and immerse in a temperature-controlled oil bath
The valve should begin opening at 75C and be fully open by 85C. Replace if response is sluggish or incorrect
  4. Step 4: Measure the compressor room ambient temperature at the intake grille height
Install exhaust ventilation or duct hot air outside if ambient exceeds 40C for more than 2 hours daily

How to Reset

Reset: Allow airend temperature to drop below 95C. Press the Alarm Acknowledge button on Sigma Control 2. The unit performs a 15-second star-delta start sequence before loading.

Common Replacement Parts

  • 6.1985.0: Oil cooler, ASD 40-50 (Aluminum plate-fin, 480x320x60 mm)
  • 6.1986.0: Cooling fan motor, 400V 3-phase (0.75 kW, 1400 RPM, IP55)
  • 6.1987.0: Thermostatic valve, 1-inch BSP (75C opening, 85C full flow)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is the maximum allowable compression temperature?

110C is the hard limit. Sustained operation above 100C degrades synthetic oil and can carbon-coat the rotors, reducing efficiency by 10-20%.

  • Q: Can I install a larger cooler on an ASD?

Yes. Kaeser offers high-temperature coolers (HT suffix) for ambient conditions up to 50C. Order by model number with -HT designation.
