Applicable Systems
OBD-II
Symptoms
System voltage below 10V for extended period; battery not charging; possible alternator failure.
Possible Causes
- Alternator not charging
- Alternator drive belt broken/loose
- Battery faulty/shorted cell
- Excessive electrical load
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Check battery voltage engine OFF
Voltage >= 12.6V - Step 2: Start engine and check charging voltage
Voltage 13.8-14.4V at idle - Step 3: Inspect alternator belt
Belt tensioned and intact - Step 4: Test alternator output current
Output meets spec (60-120A) - Step 5: Replace alternator or battery as needed
Voltage stable 13.8-14.4V
How to Reset
Clear with OBD-II scanner after charging system repair.
Common Replacement Parts
- Alternator (OEM spec)
- Drive Belt
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Can shorted battery cell cause P0562?
Yes. A battery with a shorted cell (10.5V instead of 12.6V) will cause alternator to work harder and may trigger P0562. Load test battery before alternator replacement.
