Symptoms

QGV Smart Controller has lost communication with the variable frequency drive (VFD). The compressor reverts to a fixed preset speed and cannot modulate to match demand.

Possible Causes

  • RS-485 communication cable loose or disconnected between the controller and VFD
  • VFD parameter corruption after a power surge or firmware update failure
  • Electromagnetic interference from unshielded motor cables inducing noise on the RS-485 bus
  • VFD cooling fan failure causing the drive to trip on internal overheat and drop communication

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Check the RS-485 A/B wires and shield connection at both the controller and VFD terminal blocks
    Re-seat all terminals, verify correct A/B polarity, and ensure the shield is grounded at one end only
  2. Step 2: Read the VFD fault code from the VFD keypad display or the QGV controller diagnostic screen
    Common codes: F0001 (overcurrent), F0002 (overvoltage), F0003 (undervoltage), F0004 (VFD overheat)
  3. Step 3: Inspect the VFD cooling fan - verify it spins freely and exhausts warm air during operation
    Replace the fan if stalled or noisy. Clean the VFD heatsink fins with compressed air
  4. Step 4: Separate the RS-485 cable from the motor power cable by at least 200 mm along the entire run
    If separation is impossible, install a ferrite core on the RS-485 cable at the VFD end

How to Reset

Reset: Clear the VFD fault via its keypad, then press Alarm Reset on the QGV controller. The compressor will ramp up from minimum speed over a 15-second acceleration ramp.
