Symptoms
The arc flash detection system has activated. The main breaker tripped within 2ms of detecting an arc flash event, preventing catastrophic equipment damage.
Possible Causes
- Arc flash caused by insulation failure between phase busbars
- Foreign object or tool left inside the switchgear creating a phase-to-phase short
- Condensation or water ingress in the switchgear causing tracking and flashover
- Loose busbar connection creating an arc under load current
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Do NOT approach the switchgear until the arc flash energy has dissipated and the area is verified safe
Wait at least 5 minutes after trip for any secondary arcs or fires to self-extinguish - Step 2: Open the switchgear door and visually inspect for arc damage, soot, or molten metal
Photograph the damage for insurance and investigation records - Step 3: Use a megohmmeter to test all busbar insulation to ground and phase-to-phase
Insulation resistance should be above 100 megohms; if below, the busbar needs cleaning or replacement - Step 4: Tighten all busbar connections to the manufacturer's torque specification
Use a calibrated torque wrench; replace any hardware showing signs of overheating
How to Reset
Reset: The arc flash relay requires a manual reset with a key switch after the root cause is identified and corrected. This prevents reset without proper investigation.

- Arc flash relay: High-speed, 2ms trip time (Light and current sensing for arc detection)
- Busbar insulation: Epoxy or polyester film (Replace if tracking or carbonization is visible)
