Symptoms

Engine coolant temperature above 105C; engine derate active to protect engine; overheating warning.

Possible Causes

  • Coolant level low
  • Radiator exterior fins clogged with debris
  • Thermostat stuck closed
  • Water pump impeller worn

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Check coolant level at expansion tank (COLD engine)
    Level at or above MIN mark
  2. Step 2: Inspect radiator exterior for debris blockage
    Radiator fins clean, air flowing freely
  3. Step 3: Test thermostat opening temp (82-88C)
    Thermostat opens at specified temp
  4. Step 4: Check water pump for leakage/play
    Pump bearing tight, no coolant leak
  5. Step 5: Clear debris from radiator and top up coolant
    Coolant temp below 95C at full load

Clear via Volvo Tech Tool after cooling system service.
