Carrier Transicold Prelude Error Code E2

Carrier Refrigeration Critical System

Model: Transicold Prelude | Code: E2

Applicable Systems
Carrier ComfortLink Thermostat/Controller

Symptoms

Alarm E2 indicates a low oil pressure condition. The compressor oil pressure safety switch has tripped, indicating oil pressure below 15 psi for more than 15 seconds during compressor operation. The unit shuts down immediately.

Possible Causes

  • Low oil level in the compressor crankcase
  • Oil pump failure or worn oil pump gears
  • Clogged oil filter or oil pickup screen
  • Excessive bearing wear causing internal oil leakage

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Check the compressor oil sight glass - oil level should be at or above the middle of the sight glass
Add approved POE oil if level is low, do not overfill
  2. Step 2: Check the oil pressure switch electrical continuity - disconnect and measure resistance
    Replace switch if stuck open
  3. Step 3: Replace the oil filter if it has not been serviced within the recommended interval
    Use only OEM-specified filter elements
  4. Step 4: If oil pressure does not build after filter replacement, inspect oil pump and internal bearings
A qualified technician may need to inspect the pump drive gear and shaft

How to Reset

To reset E2: 1) The oil pressure must recover to above 20 psi. 2) Manually reset the oil pressure switch by pressing the red reset button on the compressor. 3) Press the Alarm Reset on the controller. 4) The unit will attempt a restart after a 3-minute delay.

Common Replacement Parts

  • K10-2441: Oil pressure safety switch, Carrier Prelude (Set to trip at 15 psi differential)
  • HK25-0453: Compressor oil filter element (Replace annually or at 2000 runtime hours)
  • PP20-0067: OEM POE compressor oil, 1 quart (Verify oil viscosity matches OEM specification)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How often should I check compressor oil level?

Check the oil sight glass during every routine inspection. Low oil level can indicate a leak or oil migration into the refrigerant system, which requires investigation.

  • Q: What happens if E2 keeps recurring?

Repeated E2 alarms indicate a serious mechanical problem with the oil pump, bearings, or a refrigerant leak causing oil migration. Do not continue operating the compressor as this will cause catastrophic failure.
