Symptoms
The drive trips and displays SCF (Short Circuit Fault). The drive has detected a short circuit on the output side, either between output phases or between an output phase and ground. This is a critical fault that requires immediate attention.
Possible Causes
- Motor winding short circuit between phases or to ground
- Output cable damaged causing phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground short
- Drive output IGBT module short-circuited
- Output contactor or terminal block shorted
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Disconnect the motor cable at the drive output terminals U, V, W
This isolates the drive from the motor and cable - Step 2: If SCF clears without the motor, the fault is in the motor or cable
Measure motor and cable insulation with a megger - Step 3: Measure motor winding resistance and insulation to ground
Phase-to-phase should be balanced; phase-to-ground should exceed 1Mohm - Step 4: If SCF trips with the motor disconnected, the drive's IGBT module is shorted
The drive needs repair or IGBT module replacement
How to Reset
To reset: 1) Locate and fix the short circuit. 2) Press RESET. 3) Restart. Caution: Never reset SCF without finding and fixing the short; a shorted IGBT or motor can cause fire or personnel safety risk.

- Q: How does the drive detect a short circuit so quickly?
The drive uses desaturation detection on the IGBT. When a short circuit occurs, the IGBT collector-emitter voltage rises rapidly while the gate is on. The drive detects this voltage rise and trips within microseconds, before the IGBT is destroyed.
- Q: What is the difference between OC and SCF?
OC (Overcurrent) trips when the current exceeds the rated peak threshold (200-300% of rated), typically due to load transients. SCF (Short Circuit) is a more severe fault indicating a direct short circuit, which is detected even faster than OC. SCF often points to a hardware failure (IGBT, motor winding, or cable).
