Applicable Systems
3CX Backhoe
Symptoms
Engine will not crank; starter solenoid does not click.
Possible Causes
- Neutral safety switch (transmission) out of adjustment or failed.
- Starter solenoid winding open circuit.
- Battery terminal corrosion causing high resistance.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Bypass neutral switch with jumper and attempt start.
Engine cranks when switch bypassed. - Step 2: Measure battery voltage at starter main terminal during key start.
Voltage ≥ 22 V under load; no drop > 2 V from battery post. - Step 3: Check solenoid pull-in winding resistance.
Resistance 0.5–1.0 Ω; no open circuit.
How to Reset
Adjust or replace neutral safety switch; replace starter solenoid; clean battery terminals.
Common Replacement Parts
- Neutral Switch 701/80112: Neutral Switch 701/80112
- Starter Solenoid 714/40060: Starter Solenoid 714/40060
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Can I bypass the neutral switch permanently?
Not recommended—safety feature prevents starter engagement in gear.
- Q: What causes solenoid failure?
