Applicable Systems
Lithrone G40
Symptoms
The press console displays E-501, indicating a blanket cylinder pressure fault. The blanket cylinder impression pressure is outside the acceptable range, which affects print quality and can cause blanket damage. The press stops automatically.
Possible Causes
- Blanket cylinder bearing wear causing uneven pressure
- Blanket underpacking thickness incorrect for the current substrate
- Cylinder pressure setting not matching the paper thickness
- Pneumatic pressure to the impression cylinder actuator insufficient
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Check the blanket cylinder bearing for play and wear
Replace bearings if excessive play is detected - Step 2: Verify the blanket underpacking thickness matches the substrate specification
Adjust underpacking to achieve correct blanket-to-substrate gap - Step 3: Check and adjust the cylinder pressure setting for the paper thickness
Update settings in the console per the paper specification - Step 4: Verify pneumatic pressure supply to the impression actuator
Check air supply pressure is at minimum 6 bar (87 psi)
How to Reset
To reset E-501: 1) Resolve the pressure fault. 2) On the console, acknowledge the alarm. 3) Press Reset. 4) The press performs a pressure verification cycle. 5) If pressure is within tolerance, normal printing resumes.
Common Replacement Parts
- KM-G40-001: Blanket cylinder bearing set (Replace by qualified technician at 10000 hours)
- KM-G40-005: Blanket underpacking sheet, 0.10mm (Verify thickness matches specification per substrate)
- KM-G40-010: Pneumatic pressure regulator, 6 bar (Verify output pressure and drain moisture weekly)
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: How do I set the correct blanket cylinder pressure?
The correct pressure depends on blanket thickness, underpacking, and substrate thickness. Use the formula: Blanket + Underpacking = Cylinder Gap - Substrate + 0.05mm. Always verify pressure with a crush test strip and adjust per the manufacturer chart for the specific paper type.
- Q: What causes uneven blanket cylinder pressure?
Uneven pressure is typically caused by worn cylinder bearings, incorrect underpacking, inconsistent blanket tension, or substrate thickness variation. Regular bearing inspection, proper blanket installation, and substrate quality control prevent most pressure-related issues.
