Symptoms
The 3WL air circuit breaker refuses to close electrically or manually. The spring-charge motor runs continuously but the Spring Charged indicator never appears. The breaker remains in the Open position.
Possible Causes
- Broken charging motor gear or stripped drive mechanism
- Insufficient control voltage to the spring-charge motor
- Mechanical blockage in the closing latch or trip-free mechanism
- Worn or broken main contacts preventing proper engagement
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Measure the control voltage at the spring-charge motor terminals during a charge cycle
Voltage is within the rated range (typically 220V AC or 110V DC +/-10%) - Step 2: Listen for abnormal grinding noises from the charging motor; inspect the gear train
Gears are intact, lubricated, and the motor reaches a smooth stop at full charge - Step 3: Manually charge the springs using the manual crank and observe the latch engagement
Springs charge fully and the latch engages with a positive click - Step 4: If mechanical damage is evident, withdraw the breaker and inspect the main contacts and drive assembly
Contacts show normal wear only; no cracks, welding, or excessive erosion
How to Reset
Do not force the breaker closed. Repair or replace the charging mechanism or breaker as required. The breaker must charge and latch correctly before it can be closed.
