Symptoms

The SITOR fuse in the semiconductor protection feeder blows with a clear indicator showing FUSE OUT. The power semiconductor (e.g., thyristor or diode) may be shorted. The associated drive or rectifier shuts down.

  • Overvoltage transient exceeding the device breakdown voltage
  • Improper fuse selection (current rating or I2t mismatch)
  • Cooling fan failure causing junction temperature to exceed Tj_max

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Measure the semiconductor junction with a diode tester or curve tracer
    Device shows a short-circuit (<1V forward drop) in both directions, confirming failure
  2. Step 2: Inspect the snubber circuit and varistors for signs of overvoltage stress
    Varistor is intact, no cracks or discoloration; clamping voltage is within spec
  3. Step 3: Verify the fuse rating (current and I2t) matches the semiconductor protection curve per IEC 60269-4
    Fuse I2t is below the semiconductor I2t withstand rating with safety margin
  4. Step 4: Check the heatsink temperature and cooling fan operation during normal load
    Heatsink temperature is <70C and fan delivers rated airflow without vibration

How to Reset

Replace the blown SITOR fuse only after confirming the failed semiconductor is isolated. Never replace a fuse on a confirmed short-circuit without first removing the fault. Use identical fuse type and rating.
