Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Step 1: Do NOT approach the switchgear until the arc flash energy has dissipated and the area is verified safe
    Wait at least 5 minutes after trip for any secondary arcs or fires to self-extinguish
  2. Step 2: Open the switchgear door and visually inspect for arc damage, soot, or molten metal
    Photograph the damage for insurance and investigation records
  3. Step 3: Use a megohmmeter to test all busbar insulation to ground and phase-to-phase
    Insulation resistance should be above 100 megohms; if below, the busbar needs cleaning or replacement
  4. Step 4: Tighten all busbar connections to the manufacturer's torque specification
    Use a calibrated torque wrench; replace any hardware showing signs of overheating
