Applicable Systems
KSB Centrifugal Pump
Symptoms
The KSB pump displays alarm K009, indicating seal ring wear beyond tolerance. Worn seal rings increase internal recirculation, reducing pump efficiency and flow output.
Possible Causes
- Normal wear from abrasive particles in the pumped fluid
- Extended operation at off-design flow causing excessive swirl
- Thermal distortion from dry running or insufficient cooling
Troubleshooting Steps
- Step 1: Measure the seal ring radial clearance with feeler gauges
Clearance is within the maximum allowable for the pump model and stage - Step 2: Compare current pump efficiency to the original acceptance test
Efficiency loss does not exceed 5 percent from the original test value - Step 3: Check for signs of scoring or galling on the seal ring surfaces
Surfaces are smooth with no scoring, galling, or discoloration from overheating
How to Reset
To reset: 1) Replace the worn seal rings with new ones of correct material and clearance. 2) Address any abrasive or thermal issues. 3) Restart and verify performance.
